University of Cape Town Summer School 2008 – January–February
Seminar at the Centre for African Studies, UCT – 27 June 2008
SAACS organised a seminar that was presented by Professor Segger, entitled Bringing together academe, public heritage and museums: the Cultural Resources Collaboration Project in British Columbia, Canada.
Professor Martin Segger, Director of the Maltwood Museum and Gallery and Adjunct Professor of Canadian Art and Architexture at the University of Victoria, Canada, was the keynote speaker at the annual South African Museums Association Conference, hosted in partnership with ICOM-SA, ICOMOS-SA and SAACS.

The AGM was followed by a lecture, Canadian and South African relations: historical and cultural perspectives, by Peter Henshaw, Privy Council Office, Government of Canada and Department of History, University of Western Ontario.
Dinu Bumbaru Seminar – 3 October 2007
The South African Association of Canadian Studies presented a seminar by Dr Dinu Bumbaru, Secretary-General of ICOMOS, and Policy-Director of Heritage Montreal:
Facilitating community participation in the heritage of large cities: some examples from Canada.
Following Dr Bumbaru’s presentation, there was a short response by Professor Ciraj Rassool, of the Department of History at the University of the Western Cape.
This seminar represented an engagement by the South African Association of Canadian Studies with heritage issues.

Poetry Reading Fundraiser – 1 August 2007
SAACS executive committee members. Ingrid de Kok (Fiske) and Antjie Krog and well known visiting Canadian poet Carolyn Smart, gave a one hour poetry reading on Wednesday 1 August.

The South African Association of Canadian Studies and the Sociology Department, UCT, hosted a lunch time lecture by medical anthropologist, Dr Vinh-Kim Nguyen of the University of Montreal, Canada.
Dr Vinh-Kim Nguyen, a highly respected medical anthropologist and AIDS researcher from the University of Montreal, gave seminars and workshops at the University of Pretoria and the University of Cape Town. His seminar was open to members of SAACS and other members of the public as well as graduate sociology sstudents at UCT.
Cat Kidd, visiting poet – 26 March 2007
The Canadian spoken word poet, performed material from her new Bipolar Bear dvd/book as part of the Hugh Hodge series, Off the Wall, at a Touch of Madness, Observatory, Cape Town. Cat Kidd is the author/performer of Sea Peach, a cd/book of performed stories as well as a critically-acclaimed stage show. Called ‘an adult blend of Dr. Suess and Aesop’s Fables’ as well as ‘a musical theatre crash-course in punk rock zoology, Sea Peach won the MECCA for Best New Text 2003 and toured to Story-telling Festivals in Whitehorse, Yellowknife, New York, and Oslo. Cat has performed at Festival Voix D’Ameriques and Festival Metropolis Bleu; from the Edinburgh Fringe 2004 to Toronto’s World Stage 2005 to ARENA Fest in Bavaria. She has taught writing workshops at Concordia University, through the QWF, and via video-conferencing to highschools in northern Quebec. Cat Kidd’s short-story Green-Eyed Beans was nominated for this year’s Journey prize, while her voice can be heard narrating two documentaries on women’s pro sports, a cinematic lip-gloss rap, Cirque du Soleil promos, and Air Safety messages. Her new dvd/book Bipolar Bear [conundrum press] toured to Singapore in Spring 2006, while her first novel ‘Missing the Ark’ will be released through Conundrum Press in Spring 2007.
Ecological poems – 19 March 2007
Organised by Julia Martin who teaches creative writing at the English Department of University of the Western Cape, the event opened with a drama group called Brown Paper Studio, followed by a poetry reading by Michael Cope and by Cat Kidd and then with an open mike session for students for ten minutes.
Spier Arts Festival 2007
The Spier Arts Festival ran on 2 and 3 February at Spier Wine Estate.
Cat Kidd and Ingrid de Kok read at the Festival.
